My first experience entering a video contest started as a fun weekend project with my girlfriend Emily. The contest was for BlackBerry Messenger and by the time we heard about it, we only had three days to come up with a concept, create the music and shoot a video. On top of that, we had to collect as many votes and share our video with as many people as we could to make it viral. When all was said and done, we ended up coming in 2nd place. The thrill of winning and the encouraging feedback we got from our friends and family was so exhilarating that we just had to enter another contest. That was over 20 contests ago!

Prior to the BlackBerry contest, I had always made short films and music videos for fun with my friends. The feelings I got watching my creations come to life led me to study Film and Television Broadcasting in College and pursue a career in the industry. I also ended up winning awards for “Best Short Film” and “Best Cinematography” in my program.

Around the same time I developed a keen interest in music specifically rap and hip-hop. I started my own YouTube channel where I am able to showcase my music and music with other talented artists from around the world. My love for music and rapping has influenced a lot of my contest creations.

After entering a few more video contests it was proven, we were a winning success! Being able to combine my passion for film AND music and knowing that companies appreciate my creations is a great feeling.

Contest sites such as Zooppa have allowed me to share my work with a broader audience and create commercials for big-name companies that I could only dream of working with. Who would have ever imagined that I would be able to create videos for renowned companies such as BlackBerry, Microsoft, Frito Lays, 3M, and Siemens to name a few. A highlight of mine was that Microsoft actually aired my winning commercial on MTV Canada during one of its popular shows!

While I have learned that the video contest process is not always easy and is especially nerve-wracking while waiting for the winners to be announced, the opportunities I get to exercise my creative juices and develop my craft make it all worthwhile! I am also able to learn something new everyday through these contests and through the work of other creators in the community.
